Chapter Three: The Two Turncoats

  1. The man with the scar watched from a large oak tree above as Byrd and Solantis entered his tent. The traitor heard the Devonian battle horn and grinned. He was about to join the battle that could possibly crush the rebellion against Devin and he was a key piece a traitor that knew everything about this camp. He turned to jump out of the tree and join his friends. But there, behind him, in the tree, stood Calif. The traitor panicked for a few seconds almost falling out of the tree; but when he regained his balance, he noticed that Calif had the scar, Calif was a Devonian.

  2. They both made a slight smile, the wizard sighing in relief. Calif moved over towards his new companion.
"I'm Calif, as you may already know, one of the strongest and highest ranking amoung the Truffilians."
The wizard just smirked. "Congrats. They might hate it to see one of their leaders betray them."
"Yes," he said. "I will enjoy that day."

  3. "But sadly, that day is not today. They will not all die in this battle and it will be impossible to find them all without an insider. So go tell Devin what you know and tell him that I send my best regards."

  4. The Devonian dashed out of the camp and towards his friends. Calif stayed in the tree watching Solantis and Byrd.
"You must leave the camp, you are our only hope of beating Devin, we can not afford to lose you," Byrd said to Solantis.
    Solantis nodded.
"I will come with you," Byrd said.
"No. You are needed here," Solantis said to Byrd in a commanding voice.
"Then I will send Calif with you," Byrd said.

  5. Calif smirked, that is exactly what he wanted and Byrd was falling right into his trap.

  6. After Solantis and Byrd left to prepare for Solantis's departure, Calif got down from the tree and made his way to Solantis's tent.
"You wanted to see me?" Calif said to Byrd.
"Yes. I want you to escort Solantis and some of his men out of the camp and into hiding. Solantis must stay alive!" Byrd said.

  7. "Of course," said Calif. "I will keep him safe. You will continue on to lead the troops then, Byrd?"
"Yes. We will be preparing ourselves for whatever comes our way."
"And how do you know if something is coming?"
"I saw a sign. Devin is coming, I know it."

  8. "Let's go," Calif said and walked out of the tent heading towards the mountains.
Solantis and a few of his men followed Calif.
Byrd walked out of the tent and to the edge of the camp. He saw the beginning of Devin's army but the end wasn't in sight. The army was so huge. There had to be at least ten Devonians for every Solinian and Titinian. Byrd felt like he was about to be sick. Around ten people were in Solantis's escape group and if this battle was lost, those ten people would be all that was left to fight Devin. The Devonian resistance was in a wide cleared out space at the edge of the forest, easily open to any kind of attacks.
Byrd realized that he could win this battle. He started to shout orders at people. They had to move into the trees and hide to surprise the Devonians. They would hide in small groups and jump out at the Devonians. It was possible that if the Titinians and Solinians were good enough fighters that they could push back this huge army of the devil and show Devin that he would never win over Truffle.

  9. Byrd knew that if he showed weakness that his army would feel that there was no hope. He tried so hard not to show his fear of losing. Byrd pushed back into one of the bushes with a small group.
    "General Byrd?" One asked.
    "Yes?"
"Do you think we can win?" All the heads in the group turned towards Byrd, ready for the answer they were sure would come.
"I'm not sure, soldier, I'm not sure..."

  10. The Gorgons were traveling steadily closer and the knot in Byrds stomach was getting larger and larger. Everywhere, there was a nervous murmur. People muttering their opinions on if it was even remotely possible for Devin's mighty army to fall. The morale of Byrd's troops was dropping as more and more soldiers decided that it was impossible to win.

  11. The enemy troops continued gaining ground, and quickly. Byrd and his troops sat, becoming ever so less motivated to fight. They had know way of winning, and they knew that. Byrd didn't want to give in but felt if they did not surrender he would lose all respect for himself in the last minutes of his life.
"Sir," a soldier said, interupting Byrd's thoughts. "We can do this. I have fought under Titan for the longest time and, along with you, have been a spy for Titan. We may be outnumbered, and our will power is mostly lost but if we can hold in for even the littlest of time, a miracle will come. I know it." The soldier looked up towards the heavens.
Great. Thought Byrd, the crazy one comes to try and comfort me. Miracle. What kind of miracle? One that falls from the sky?! Ha! "Back to your post, soldier." Byrd sighed.

  12. And the enemy drew nearer. Bows' strings were pulled taught with arrows knocked. With every second men grew tenser and tenser. Byrd felt as if his stomach had a butterfly pavilion inside of it. The Titanians stayed put.
"Is this the battle for Truffle?" Byrd asked himself inside his head, "If Solantis survives and the rest perish, is there still hope?"

Metal struck metal and sparks flew. Arrows whistled by. spells lit up the darkening sky. Devonians were dropping like flies but Byrd knew that they couldn't keep this up for much longer. Byrd knew that the Titinians were dead and all hope lay in the hands of Solanits. In those last moments before Byrd ran into battle, he realized that he did not trust Solantis. Byrd was worried for Calif's safety. "If Solantis was a traitor," Byrd thought, "Calif could be dead and Truffle could be forever controlled by a devil."

Byrd dashed at the nearest enemy slicing his throat like butter with his blade. Another enemy lunged at Byrd from behind; but Byrd was quicker he drew one of his cutlasses and stabbed his attacker in the gut. He quickly followed with a slash of his sword. The gorgan crumpled to the ground. Byrd drew his bowgun and took aim at the enemies rushing towards him. Byrd shot off a dart and it faintly whistled a tune of the damned for the enemies it approached. The dart struck one gorgon dead in the center of his head. His companions didn't look at their fallen partner. Not because they didn't care but because before they could cock their heads towards the sickening scream of the dead gorgon, the dart exploded taking all of the surrounding gorgons into the pits of hell along with the first.
Byrd was now the enemies' number one target. Several gorgons enclosed in a circle around Byrd; cutting him off from the deadly battle raging around them. Byrd drew several of his six inch knives with a crooked grin stretching across his face. Three blades were in each hand but only for a second. The next instant the blades were lodged in the enemies' skulls and Byrd was sprinting out of the circle towards the rest of the battle.

  13. All around him, the enemy army fell. He raised his blade to block an attack as he ran, and swiftly slashed the attacker. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw one of his soldiers he knew well. The soldier was bleeding. He ran to help ward off any enemy attackers while others helped the soldier.
He drew his twin cutlasses and prepared for the army men coming his way. Gorgons lurched at him, but he simply dodged and stabbed their back-sides with his blades. Still, more and more came.
Byrd loved a good fight. He fought long and hard, covered in his enemy's blood.

  14. The surge of gorgons began to slow. Byrd couldn't see very far ahead because of a cloud of dust. to tell if another wave was coming so he bent over his wounded friend. Byrd's friend attempted to say a few words but he coughed up blood instead of sound. His head fell to the ground and his body went limp. Byrd could do nothing. He moved the body into a purple bush and hid it well. Then, Byrd faced the cloud of dust waiting for revenge. Red eyes shown through the dust cloud. Unfortunately, a sword was not the weapon that appeared out of the dust; a staff poked through the cloud and Byrd realized, with a sudden twist in his stomach, that he was dead. Byrd drew his cutlasses as the wizard approached. The wizard flicked his staff several times and several different colored orbs zipped off towards Byrd. Byrd dove to the ground and rolled under the orbs. Byrd was two inches away from the wizard. He stabbed; the wizard drew his sword halfway to block and then swiftly kicked Byrd sending him backwards.Byrd did a back flip in mid-air and threw a couple six inch knives at the wizard who parried with several flicks of his staff. Byrd then lunged at the wizard. The wizard side stepped but was pierced through his now limp arm.

  15. Byrd rolled out of the way, keeping his eyes locked on the wizard. He could hear his friends and enemies all around him, but his only focus was on the wizard who was walking back towards him. Byrd only wished he was better with his staff than this wizard.
The wizard raised his staff with his good arm, a deathly smile wiped across his face. He knew he was going to kill the general, he felt it. But Byrd would not give up without a fight, and when larger orbs were hurled towards him, Byrd dodged. He was caught by one, on his right wing, but it was not enough to stop the warrior.

  16. Byrd threw several more six inch knives on both sides of the wizard but not directly at him. The wizard jumped to avoid what he thought was a knife hurtling towards him. Byrd was now under the wizard both cutlasses at the ready. Right before the wizard hit the ground Byrd sliced him into three useless pieces of flesh and bone on the dirt. Byrd backed away and shot the wizards staff. Byrd knew that if he didn't the wizard would be alive in three days. Byrd laughed the happiest laugh he had in his life. Titanis wasn't dead; his staff was left on the ground. The wizard that killed Titanis never had the chance to destroy it. Titanis was alive.

Byrd looked at the wizard's burning staff, overjoyed. Byrd wished the wizard had killed him. Byrd killed Truffle and he knew it. The staff on the ground was Titanis's. Byrd killed Titanis. He wanted to die; he had committed a crime almost equal to the evil that Devin has cast over Truffle.

Byrd screamed, tears streaming from his eyes. He ran into the enemies dicing them up like tomatoes. Their innards spilling over the battlefield. Byrd didn't think, he just killed. Byrd was a robotic killing machine; since Titanis can no longer kill the demon, Byrd was going to. Truffle would not die on his account.

Byrd spun and twirled he was like a ballerina of death. Gorgons were split between fight and flight. They were momentarily paralyzed at the fear of this insane warrior. Byrd diced at least 30 gorgons before they could even react. They all ran in unison. Byrd dropped his cutlasses and started chucking his six inch knives right and left piercing gorgons. He took away their lives just when they thought they were going to keep them. Byrd had won the battle. The first major victory against Devin... ever!

  17. The joy of victory was not long lasting. A second wave of troops appeared on the horizon. It was a miracle that the Devonians lost the last battle but there was no miracle large enough to make them lose again. And to add to Byrd's new found anguish, he remembered that Titanis was never coming back.
"Retreat!" Byrd yelled, "We must find Solantis and save ourselves."
The scattered Solinians and Titinians didn't need convincing; they dashed deeper into the forest like gazelle running from attacking lions. They followed the planned route for Solantis and were soon on the other side of the forest hiking up a mountain. As Byrd looked up the mountain, he had a peculiar feeling in the depths of his stomach. Something was incredibly wrong. He urged the troops to move faster and they listened, longing to see Solantis, alive. Byrd only hoped that they could catch Solantis before anything happened. "How could Solanits be touched?" Byrd asked himself, "He has Calif with him. Calif is one of the greatest warriors ever. There isn't any possibility that Calif would let a Devonian anywhere near Solantis."
Byrd smiled. Nothing could happen. Then it hit him hard like a freight train. He should have seen it before all the puzzle pieces were fitting together as his life fell apart. He rounded a corner and his fears became reality.
