Chapter two: Panic

The Titanians woke up watching their leader stare at their barren camp wide eyed and trembling.

  1. A leader should never show fear, thought Byrd. It's simply not normal. There has to be something terribley wrong for Titan to be shaking. Byrd pondered but couldn't quite figure out what could have happened. And didn't want to ask his frightened leader, afraid of what the answer could be.

  2. A single child remembered seeing fear soaring towards him and shouted "What was that thing?"

The Titan did not answer, Devin was unbeatable he could not win.

The child's exclamation shocked the camp and injected it with a large dose of panic.

  3. Everyone began rushing around, yelling, screaming. They were frightened. All of them. Nothing like this had ever happened the the Trufilian people and they had no idea how to react other than the fear building inside them.

  4. "Why don't the rest of us remember the creature?" someone shouted.
Others mumbled wondering exactly the same thing. The mumbles turned into talk. The talk turned into shouting at Titanis.
"We have to go," Titanis whispered to himself. "General Byrd!" Titanis yelled, "We must depart immediately."

  5. Everyone was panicking, running, and screaming except for Titanis and Calif. Titanis was standing there a look of disbelief on his face. Did he really see Devin? Calif was standing there completely calm, occasionally helping people carry something or telling someone where to go.

  6. Byrd walked up and stood behing Titanis. "Sir, everyone is on they're way out. The last few are leaving now," he said. Titanis said nothing.

  7. He turned and followed the crowd. Thinking, wondering how Devin found them.

    ReplyDelete
  8. He looked towards Calif, standing off to the sides with a smug look on his face. Byrd wondered about Calif... but shook his head, not believing that he would ever betray his own kind.

    ReplyDelete
  9. "Calif let's go," Titanis barked.
    Calif bitterly obeyed.

  10. The crowd walked, Titanis and Calif lagging behind. Calif kept looking over his shoulder, as if to see if he was being followed. Titanis' head hung down, he couldn't figure out what had happened. Byrd threaded his way through the mass, helping those who needed it.

  11. The entire crowd, almost simultaneously, unsheathed their swords and wizards grabbed their staffs. Titanis's head instantly shot up. A pack of Gorgons were sprinting towards them.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The pack wasn't large but Gorgons were dangerous beasts. The warriors had to be careful while fighting. Byrd rushed to the front of the crowd, ready for battle.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Titanis pushed him out of the way, ready to do his part to defeat that horrid beast. He pulled out his staff and started sending various colors of spells towards the gorgons.

    ReplyDelete
  14. But these were no ordninary gorgons.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The spells bounced right off of them. They were magic resistant. The wizards staffs disappeared. Titanis pulled his bowgun from his back and started firing off darts at the swiftly approaching gorgons. Many others did the same. Several gorgons were taken out by the darts but most of them were still charging towards the Titinians. "They are commiting suicide," Byrd thought. "The whole Titinian army, 10,000 men at least, was here and these gorgons, maybe a hundred strong, were charging at them. Why?"

    ReplyDelete
  16. Byrd had no idea the gorgons had one of the strongest wizards with them, stopping any magic coming their way by creating a magic resistant shield around the army.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The Titinians easily slaughtered the enemies until the wizard was the only one remaining.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The wizard fell to the ground, trembling and begging for the mighty army to spare him.

    ReplyDelete
  19. A soldier close to the wizard walked towards him, images of his friends jealous over the fact that he killed an enemy wizard.
"No!" Titanis and Byrd screamed in unison.
It was too late. With a slash of the wizards staff the boy was thrown backwards at the speed of a jet plane and plowed through part of the Titan's army like a freight train. Several people jumped aside but about 20 were taken out by this soldier's mistake. Byrd, not wanting to get close to the wizard fired off several rounds of his bowgun. The wizard batted them away like tennis balls thrown by a two- year old. Titanis walked close to the wizard, circling him. When he was directly behind the wizard, Titanis flicked his staff. The wizard flinched and Titanis's spell bounced off. This was the first wizard on wizard battle in several decades. This wizard was weak compared to Titanis; he was like an ant versus a bazooka. Titanis, within several seconds was about to finish him off when another wave of gorgons charged, firing off volleys of arrows. Titanis diverted his attention and turned the arrows to dust. A fraction of a second and Titanis was thrown into the air and ripped from his staff. The wizard smirked, Titanis, the last real threat to the era of Devin was dead. The body of the hero never hit the ground it disappeared behind the blinding light of the sun. Byrd finished off the wizard before the wizard managed to wipe the idiotic smirk off his face. The Titinians then defeated the remaining gorgons with ease. They walked on heads hung in defeat. Two heads looked forward, not emotional about the sudden loss of a hero. Byrd and Calif walked side by side. Seemingly untouched, ready to lead in Titanis's absence.

  20. They found a camping spot at the base of a large mountain. It was well forested, so there wasn't much chance of the Titinians being found. Byrd, the new assumed leader stopped and shouted here. The Titinians dropped their things, panting like a dog that just ran halfway around the world.
"Why this far?" one asked quizzically.
"Would you rather be dead or walk a few extra steps?" Byrd asked.

  21. Byrd's voice echoed through the crowd and the Titanians hushed. They had lost their leader. They had lost their hope. The Titanians were as close to broken as they could be.

    ReplyDelete
  22. "Titanis was dead to us before. When he was imprisoned we thought he had perished. It was harder without him, but the Titinians stood strong. We will not live in a world with Devin as our king. We will fight until he is removed from the throne. And we will do this with or without Titanis. He was a great soldier and a good strategist but we do not need him!" Byrd spoke these words knowing that they were lies but the crowd ate them up a few smiles of hope returning.
If they had any hope in defeating Devin, it definitely wasn't from moping around crying about the lost Titan.
Suddenly, without warning they were surrounded by a large ring of wizards. The Titinians unsheathed their swords and scrambled for their bowguns and staffs. Their weapons were on fire. Too hot to hold flames licking the weapons. Several Titinian wizards attempted to stop the spell but their staffs were also untouchable. Once again, the Titinian camp was in panic.
From a point on the circle, the Titians could hear whispers.
"They don't look like gorgons," one voice whispered.
"Devin must be gaining human followers," another voice whispered.
"Who are you people?" Byrd shouted, not able to keep his curiosity in.
"You first," a more confident voice taunted, stepping out of the circle closer to the Titinians.
Byrd faced this assumed leader of the wizard circle. Byrd now had a decision to make. If these wizards were under Devin's command, they would kill the Titinians in an instant. They didn't seem like Devonians though. They were cautious always looking around for a surprise. Not confident like gorgons. They didn't have uniforms and their weapons were old and battered while gorgons had new more intimidating looking weapons. Byrd took the biggest gamble in the history of the Titinians.
"We are the Titinians. Led by The Titan," Byrd said, he was nervous but spoke in a confident voice.
Several gasps were heard from the outside of the circle and Byrd waited for the circle's leader to speak.

    ReplyDelete
  23. "And where is this mighty Titan of yours?" The circle's leader spoke with a huge grin stretched across his face. "You are certainly not him, too weak."
"He is no longer with us," Byrd replied, ignoring the second comment made by the man. "We lost him in a battle, he saved his people."
The circle gasped and once again the Titanian's heads hung down. "Pity. I am sorry to hear that." There was a long pause before the leader spoke again, "We are wanderers. One of the strongest wandering groups that exist."
"So I can see, you are rather large to be a wandering pack," Byrd said.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "We believed we were the last hope of defeating Devin. We needed to be strong and we have come along way. Devin is still untouchable. It's incredible, his power. He has mastered death and has acquired the largest army in Trufilian history. Ha! And we are a wondering pack of around 15,000 trying to take down an empire. The Titan was a huge asset in defeating Devin. How could you lose him?" the leader of the circle asked.
"He... he is cocky and brave. It is impossible to keep him out of a battle. He was facing one of Devonian's strongest wizards and was winning but gorgons came and he couldn't fight them both," Byrd said nervous of how the leader would react. "I should have saved him but it was like practice for him facing that wizard. He wasn't a threat."
"Obviously he was. But I understand what you are saying. Will you join us?" the leader asked.
    "Do I have a choice?"
    "No"
    "Then you have your answer."

    ReplyDelete
  25. The crowds cheered. Finally, an ally that could be counted on to help fight against Devin. It was a time to rejoyce but still, both armies together were not enough to defeat the mighty army Devin held under his power and the other powers he had aquired.
Byrd turned back to his troops. "We will fight to the end!" He declared. "But tonight, tonight we rest. Our army will be stronger with sleep; we, along with our new allies, will have watchers tonight. We will switch shifts, watching out for anyone or anything to be causious about. Sleep well my Titanians."
And with that, there was much rustling going around as everyone began setting up camp and preparing for their night shifts.

  26. Byrd decided to talk to this leader that he had met. He wanted to know how dedicated he was and what plans he had. Byrd also wondered if wizards were the only soldiers that this leader had. But most of all, Byrd wondered who was this guy who was able to bring together such a large army? The leader was found leaning against the base of a large oak tree.He looked at Byrd but didn't move or speak.
"How did you do all of this? You have a pretty impressive army under your command."
"We all thought Titanis was dead. When the castle was raided, we split into two groups so that if one was ambushed there would still be a chance of defeating Devin. I was the leader of this one and Titanis led yours. Only Titanis and I knew about the split up, which is why you weren't aware of us."
"But the castle didn't have this big of an army."
"I gathered troops as I led my army around Truffle. The king's army isn't the only group of Devin haters. Peasants are struggling under his tyrannical control. Most of this army is made of peasants. Trained, of course. But weak."
    "So it isn't only wizards?"
"Ha! No. The rest of the army is at our headquarters. We only have a handful of wizards."
    "How large is your army?"
"60,000 strong, at least. It is a good start but against Devin's soldiers, it would be like a twig trying to beat a chainsaw." "So we can't win?" Byrd asked drooping his head.
"We can win. There is always hope. How well do you know Titanis, penguin?"
"I know how he fights and how he hates Devin. I know what his plans were and his story since he fled the castle."
"So, you don't know who he is?"
"I know he is the rightful ruler of Truffle."
"Titanis dead is the doom of Truffle," the leader said bleakly.
"No. That can't be. There has to be another..."
"Devin could crush our army right now if he wanted. He is that powerful. This demon had only one match on this doomed planet. You let the hope of Truffle die," the leader accused, not able to keep the anger and hate out of his voice.
"How do you know so much about Titanis? Who are you?"
"If you let me die, Truffle will be dead. If I die within three moon cycles, all is lost and this planet will be ruled by this pure evil for eternity. As for my name, you may call me captain."
"How do I know I can trust you?"
"It doesn't matter weather or not you trust me because I could squash you like a bug between my two fingers. I am on your side little penguin. If you keep me alive, you may very well get to see Truffle restored to its former glory. If you kill me, like you did Titanis, you will have doomed Truffle. You will have destroyed its people. You will have torchered their children for all eternity. You will have killed everything that ever good person left on this planet has worked for. So, don't let me die penguin." The Captain's words were harsh but Byrd swore to himself that he would keep this man alive.
"Goodnight," the captain said nonchalantly and left Byrd standing under the tree, bewildered.

  27. After coming to his senses, Byrd went to his watch post. There were two wizards from The Captain's circle. The wizards were talking about their leader. They instantly stopped when Byrd walked up. Byrd sighed, he was extremely curious about this captain person. Byrd just had a feeling that this leader was the key to beating Devin now that Titanis was gone.
"How did you like The Captain?" one of the wizards asked.
"Who is he?" Byrd asked, ignoring the question.
"He doesn't trust you yet. You will find out eventually. He has to be cautious now that The Titan is gone. If you get him through these three days, you will gain his trust." The wizard responded.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Byrd sighed. "So I just have to keep him alive, is that it? As if it is a simple task? Devin could come to wipe us out at any time and I am supposed to keep this man, who doesn't even trust me, alive?!"
The wizard laughed. "It'll be easier than you think. You have your army and our army helping. Plus, Devin won't be coming soon. You have enough time to gain the Captian's trust before a fight."
"And how do you know this?"
"Trust me, if anyone knows anything about Devin and his army, I'm one of the men who knows the most. Look, I have nothing against you but I have been commanded not to tell our secrets." He stood to walk away. "G'night, my shift is up. I'll send another wizard out shortly." As the wizard turned, Byrd noticed a large scar running from his right eye and curving down to his jaw.
The other wizard sat there, silent. He hadn't said a word since Byrd arrived.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Byrd had no idea what to do. That scar was a Devonian symbol. It only appeared before a Devonian attack. The mark was a symbol to all Devonians to get ready. Byrd knew what was coming because he was once a Devonian. He was Devin's right hand man. It was ruined when Devin told Byrd his great plan to take over Truffle and how to control its people in a never ending tyrannous storm of power. Byrd knew he was no match to fight Devin so before Devin attacked the Trufilian kingdom, Byrd found Calif, Titanis's and Solantis's dad and they were able to escape. Byrd gasped, going through his memories, he knew who this captain was. It was Solantis, the supposedly dead second prince of Truffle. The only living air to the throne of Truffle. Byrd had to warn him of the Devonian attack.
    Byrd rushed to Solantis's tent.
"Aren't you supposed to be at your post, penguin?" Solantis asked.
"We are about to be attacked," Byrd stated bluntly, "One of your men is a Devonian spy. He has the scar showing that a Devonian battle is being plotted. Solantis, you need to survive and take the throne. You are the only living blood relative to the former king of Truffle. This man with the scar has to be killed and we have to leave!"
Solantis started grabbing items from around his tent. Byrd noticed most a sword, staff, and a bowgun.
"Who is this man?" Solantis asked.
"I don't know but I watched him go to his tent."
Solantis nodded and Byrd left the tent leading the last prince of Truffle to a traitorous wizard. Byrd had gained this captain's trust. Byrd and his army were now part of Solantis's clan and as they dashed to this traitorous wizard they both thought one thing, "Could that get out of this camp before they were slaughtered by a ruthless army."
But Byrd, promised himself that Solantis would make it through these three days.
They entered the tent. It was empty. A battle horn sounded. Death was on their doorstep.

  30. I think we should end the chapter here.
